Laundry Hacks That Are Absolute Game Changers

Laundry may be the most dreaded and stressful chore of all.

You've got tons of items to wash, some of which are stained or incorporate special care instructions, and everything needs to be sorted based on color.

We don't want to ruin anything, but we hope to be as fast as possible. So here are some laundry hacks from experts at our corporate housing in Spartanburg, SC, that will change the game and allow you to have a less stressful laundry day.

1. Keep the machine clean with baking soda and vinegar

Since a washing machine is constantly being filled with water, the moisture can create mildew and make your apparel smell weird. It's easy to keep it clean. You simply need to know how.

Start by wiping down the interior of the washing machine with a rag soaked in hydrogen peroxide. Pay attention to tight spots in your drum and get out anything that is stuck.

Then, use a half cup of baking soda with a quart of vinegar in your empty washing machine. Set the water temperature to the hottest setting and run the washer through a complete cycle. This should disinfect machine parts you can't reach with your rag. Repeat this procedure once a month to discourage any mildew from growing and keep your clothes smelling fresh.

2. Use baking soda to brighten your whites

If your white clothing is beginning to look dull and dingy, put a half cup of baking soda in the wash with the detergent and execute the load as normal. If your garments need an additoinal brightness boost, boil a gallon of water and use a half cup of lemon juice. Soak a few white clothing pieces in the hot lemon water for up to an hour, then wash normally for more vibrant whites.

3. Darken black clothes with coffee

If you've noticed that your black shirts and pants look a little light and gray, use coffee to darken them. Make two or three cups of coffee and pour it in your washer. Then, put in ONLY black clothes and set it to a rinse cycle. Your garments will come out darker, and the color lasts longer.

4. Salt stops bright colors from fading

Colored clothes fade quickly, even using suitable detergents. So instead, add a third cup of salt to the wash to preserve those bright colors and use the regular cycle. This works particularly well if done the first time new clothing is washed and stops the colors from fading over time.

5. Line-dry clothes on a pool noodle to avoid creases

If you normally utilize a line or rack to dry your clothes, you're probably familiar with the pesky creases in shirts and pants. To avoid them, put a slit along a pool noodle's side and use it to encase the line or rod on your drying rack. You'll be able to dry the garments on the line without having to iron them after.
